About Homelessness in Singapore

Homelessness is not a one-dimensional issue.

Homelessness itself is a symptom rather than a root cause. Many individuals are rendered homeless due to a combination of one or more of the following issues: poverty, estranged familial relationships, mental illnesses, alcoholism, and substance abuse (not an exclusive list).

About Homelessness in Singapore

The Issue of Hostile Architecture

A city-state filled with hostile architecture has rendered most public spaces unfavourable for sleeping rough, forcing many to sleep in more secluded areas. However, these also tend to be perfect spots for robberies to take place. Many homeless individuals thus are robbed of their phones and identity documents. Beyond the financial costs of replacing these essential items, they also lose access to social services and assistance.

Homelessness is a complex social issue that cannot be addressed overnight. Time, effort, dedication, and resources from all relevant stakeholders is required to uplift this vulnerable group of individuals within the society.
